GEO vs SEO: what changes when buyers ask AI instead of Google

September 9, 2026

SEO earned you a position on a results page and a shot at the click. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a different game: the assistant reads the web, forms an answer, and names two or three businesses. The user never sees a results page. Understanding what transfers from SEO and what doesn't is the difference between optimizing efficiently and cargo-culting old tactics.

There is no page two — there isn't even a page

Position seven on Google still gets discovered. In an AI answer, you're either named or you're not. This makes AI visibility closer to winner-take-most than classic search ever was, and it's why measuring your presence in answers matters more than any rank tracker.

Keywords become questions

Nobody types "dentist Austin implants cost" into ChatGPT. They ask: "I need an implant in Austin, who's good and what will it cost?" Content that answers full questions in plain language — and marks them up with FAQ schema — matches the conversational retrieval AI engines run. Keyword-density thinking actively hurts here, because stuffed text is exactly what assistants decline to quote.

What transfers from SEO

A lot, fortunately: crawlability, fast server-rendered pages, structured data, authoritative third-party mentions, consistent business information. If you've done technical SEO well, you're halfway to GEO. The overlap is why we recommend fixing the shared layer first — it pays in both channels.

What's genuinely new

Three things. Crawler policy: GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot need explicit allowing, separate from Googlebot. Citability: engines quote concrete facts, so vague copy that ranked fine on Google contributes nothing to an AI answer. And volatility: answers change with each model update, so measurement is continuous, not a one-time audit.

Where to spend your next hour

In order: open robots.txt to AI crawlers; put verifiable facts on your key pages; add JSON-LD and FAQ schema; publish llms.txt; then measure whether the engines actually name you for your buyers' questions — and re-measure monthly. Everything on that list except measurement is a one-time fix.

AnswerRank exists for the measurement half: the free check shows whether ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend you today, and monitoring tracks the drift so you don't re-audit by hand every month.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No — they run in parallel. Google still drives most discovery traffic today, but AI-assisted buying research is growing fast, and the two share enough foundation that fixing crawlability, facts and structured data improves both.

What does GEO stand for?

Generative Engine Optimization — making your business visible and accurately described in answers generated by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini.

Do backlinks matter for AI visibility?

Corroboration matters: assistants cross-check claims against directories, reviews and independent mentions. It's less about link equity than about consistent, verifiable information appearing in sources the engine trusts.
