How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT (2026 guide)
August 25, 2026
Every day, potential customers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini questions like "best dentist near me" or "which tool should I use for X" — and the assistant answers with two or three specific names. There is no page two. Either you're one of the names, or the customer never learns you exist.
1. Let AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt: many sites accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. If an AI crawler can't read your site, nothing else on this list matters. Explicitly allowing them is step zero.
2. Publish citable facts, not slogans
AI engines recommend businesses they can describe with specifics: years in business, exact services, prices, locations, credentials. "Award-winning solutions for your needs" gives an AI nothing to quote. "Family dental clinic in Austin since 2011, same-day emergency appointments, from $90" gives it everything.
3. Add structured data
JSON-LD markup (LocalBusiness, Product, SoftwareApplication, FAQPage) is machine-readable truth about your business. It's been a Google best practice for years — and AI engines read it too. FAQ schema is especially powerful because it mirrors the question-answer format assistants work in.
4. Publish an llms.txt
A curated, plain-text summary of your business at /llms.txt gives AI systems a single authoritative source to draw from. Ten minutes of work for the strongest emerging signal in AI search.
5. Be present where AI engines look
Perplexity and ChatGPT's browsing mode lean on well-structured public sources: directories, review platforms, comparison pages, community mentions. Consistent name/address/description across them builds the corroboration AI needs to trust you.
6. Measure, then re-measure
AI answers change as models and indexes update. Check monthly whether the engines mention you for your core buyer questions, which competitors they name instead, and whether your fixes moved the needle. What gets measured gets improved.
AnswerRank automates this whole loop: the free check asks all four engines your buyers' questions and scores your visibility; the grader audits your site's AI-readable layer; the fix pack generates llms.txt, JSON-LD and FAQ schema from your own content; and monitoring re-checks weekly with alerts when a new competitor appears.
